Questions for Better Marketing

I recently enrolled in an incredible business class, online, called “B-school” from Marie Forleo. The content is amazing, but not exactly what I was expecting to start out with. I found that there are 3 questions that I answered that lead to better marketing.

To get straight to the point, the thing that surprised me was just how much psychology there is surrounding marketing your business. Sure, there are the nuts and bolts about appropriate times to send emails and best practices for social media. But something new has emerged for me about how important it is for you as a business (and me as a business) to “do the work” surrounding how you feel about your clients and what you are offering them.

To give you a taste here are some of the things I have learned so far about “Doing the Work” answer these 3 Questions for Better Marketing :

  • How do you want to SERVE? It is so incredibly important for us to be clear about what kind of contribution or products or services are making to not just our clients, but also to the greater world around us. Ask yourself this, “In what ways does my offering make someone’s life better?” and “In the most ideal situation, how will my customer feel after buying Product X from me?”
  • Who do you want to SERVE? I have heard the phrase “there are riches in the niches” before, but never really grasped it until now. When you ask yourself, “Who will get the absolute most out of working with me or buying from me?”, you get really clear on who you are marketing to, and feel really great about doing it. What type of person do you find the most gratification from helping with your product or service? Once you know the answers to these two questions, you can really tailor your marketing strategy and feel really good sharing your services with people who will really benefit from them.
  • Why do you want to SERVE? You may have a vague idea of why you got into the business or stayed with the business that you are currently in. But it REALLY helps to revisit this work often, in my opinion, especially when you are working with your marketing. I mean, the obvious answer is about making money. But you could make money any old way, why this one? What about what you offer makes you happy? Why are you passionate about doing the work you do? What thrills in your work? I have said this at least once to all of my clients, people don’t care about your “what” until they know your “why”. This is what connects you to your customers. This is what draws them to you and makes them want to tell other people about you.

Spend some time today “doing the work” and drilling down into each of these questions and I guarantee you that your marketing will become SIGNIFICANTLY more effective.
